Science: Simple Machines
Enduring Understandings
1) Simple Machines are still used to develop and implement unique engineering feats.
2) Simple Machines help assist in many aspects of our lives.

Essential Questions
1) How were simple machines used in the development of technologies in World War II?
2) Why do complex problems often use simple solutions and/or machines to help the problems be solved?

Lessons/Activities
Day One:
Do Now: (Short Journal) What do you think is the fastest way to get an object from point A to point B? Easiest? Economical? Why?
Lesson: Students will be put into small groups of 3-5 students. They will be given the objective of creating a simple machine that can launch a pom-pom the furthest. They will need to brainstorm and then design their idea with the materials that are provided. They should be encouraged to use all the materials, but don't have to.
Day Two
Do Now: Go the following link: http://www.combinedops.com/Mulberry%20Harbours.htm#The Concept. Read about the science behind the Mulberry Harbors. Write a short journal about what interested you the most.
Lesson: Students will have to create as they best again the model they created and test it. Teachers can determine grades based on their performance.
